What is delayed discovery cleanup after a suicide?
Delayed discovery cleanup is the restoration of a home after a person who died by suicide was not found for some time. Over days, natural fluids move into bedding, furniture, flooring and the subfloor, and strong odor spreads through the home. Technicians remove affected materials, clean and seal the structure, treat odor at its source and dispose of waste as regulated medical waste.
Why time changes the cleanup
When someone is not found right away, the home changes with each day that passes. Fluids move downward from wherever your loved one was, through cushions or carpet, into the pad and onto the wood subfloor below. In some homes they reach a ceiling or room underneath. The warmer the season, the faster this happens.
Odor travels too, through doorways and the air system, into fabrics and drywall in other rooms. Air fresheners and open windows will not solve it. The smell ends when the materials holding it are removed and the structure is cleaned and sealed. We take on all of that work so no one in your family has to.
When families and owners call us
- A loved one who died by suicide was found after several days
- A welfare check led to the discovery
- A strong odor fills the home or nearby units
- Fluids reached carpet, padding or the subfloor
- Stains appeared on a ceiling or wall below
- The family lives out of town and needs help with the home
Why this cleanup should be left to trained crews
Time adds health concerns that are not visible from the doorway.
Deep contamination
Fluids may have soaked through several layers of flooring and need to be cut out and cleaned beneath.
Bacteria growth
Body fluids feed bacteria that spread into porous materials and can affect anyone who handles them.
Odor in the structure
Smell settles into subfloor, drywall and ductwork, and will return unless the source is removed and sealed.
Your well-being
Seeing a loved one's home in this condition is very hard. You deserve to remember them differently.
How we restore the home
We work gently and keep you updated, sharing only as much detail as you want.
A gentle first call
We confirm the home has been released and ask whether there are belongings you hope we can find and save.

Questions families ask us
Honest, gentle answers for a difficult time. More on our questions page.
Talk with us nowWill the odor ever fully go away?
Yes. When the materials holding the odor are removed and the structure is cleaned and sealed, the odor does not return.
Does the subfloor really have to come out?
Not always. If fluids reached the wood, we may be able to clean and seal it. If it is deeply soaked, removing that section is the only way to stop the odor.
What about the apartment below?
We check for stains or odor in the unit below and clean ceilings or other affected areas there as well.
Can any belongings be kept?
Items in other rooms are usually fine after cleaning. We look for keepsakes and documents in the affected area and save what we safely can.
Will insurance cover this?
Homeowner's, renter's and landlord policies often do. We provide photos and an itemized report and can talk with your adjuster for you.
Is there someone I can talk to about my grief?
Yes. You can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time, day or night, whether or not you are in crisis.
